When Fabio DeMelo founded Wave Function Trading to export minerals from Brazil to China, he expected the hard part to be logistics. He was wrong.
The hard part was everything else. Unverified buyers who claimed million-dollar purchasing power but couldn’t produce a single proof-of-funds letter. Sellers presenting mandates that turned out to be recycled from deals that collapsed years ago. Brokers who facilitated introductions only to be cut out when the principals went direct.
Months of emails. Spreadsheets shared over WhatsApp. Letters of Intent passed back and forth in Word documents with no version control, no verification, no structure. Negotiations that took weeks would collapse overnight because one party couldn’t be validated. It wasn’t a technology problem — it was that no commodity trading company had built the technology.
But Fabio wasn’t just a trader. He was an engineer. With 30 years in technology, he had managed over 50 enterprise applications for companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500. He’d built portals that generated over $100 million in sales. He had served as CEO, CTO, and VP across multiple companies. He held a Master’s degree in Information Systems from the University of Utah and had taught Business and E-Commerce at the university level.
He had spent his career building exactly this kind of system — structured platforms that bring order to complex, multi-party processes. He looked at the commodity trade industry and saw the same pattern he’d seen in every industry before it was transformed by technology: brilliant people, doing important work, with terrible tools.
